All About Series: Growing, Sowing, Caring For Strawberries
Written For Caledonian Horticulture

We have a guest blog series at Caledonian Horticulture talking about what we grow in our garden in Scotland, UK which if UK had zones it would be in Zone 8b.

In this series of blogs we detail all the soft fruits, fruit & nut trees, herbs, edible flowers & veggies that we are growing in our Food Forest, Mini linear Food Forest, Raised Beds and Kitchen Courtyard Garden.  Through this series, you’ll discover practical tips on how to sow, grow, divide, prune and care for a variety of plants, while looking at sustainable and environmentally friendly gardening practices.

You can find the full list of the ongoing series

We’ve had strawberries throughout our garden for several years now and they’ve become a great crop. From hanging baskets and raised beds to spreading gently across the Food Forest floor, strawberries bring colour, ground cover and sweet harvests to every layer of the garden.

Their low growing habit and adaptability make them ideal for a range of growing spaces, producing generous crops while also helping to suppress weeds and protect the soil. In the Food Forest, they act as a living mulch, while baskets and beds allow for easy harvesting and better protection from pests.

Caring for strawberries is straightforward and satisfying. Regular watering, occasional feeding, and thinning runners help keep plants productive. Whether grown for fresh eating, preserving, or simply enjoying their flowers and fruit, watching strawberries return and spread year after year is a reminder of how well they fit into a resilient garden system.
