All About Series: Growing, Sowing, Caring For Garlic Chives
Written For Caledonian Horticulture

We have a guest blog series at Caledonian Horticulture talking about what we grow in our garden in Scotland, UK which if UK had zones it would be in Zone 8b.

In this series of blogs we detail all the soft fruits, fruit & nut trees, herbs, edible flowers & veggies that we are growing in our Food Forest, Mini linear Food Forest, Raised Beds and Kitchen Courtyard Garden.  Through this series, you’ll discover practical tips on how to sow, grow, divide, prune and care for a variety of plants, while looking at sustainable and environmentally friendly gardening practices.

You can find the full list of the ongoing series

Guides to the Fruits, Herbs & Edible Flowers We Grow: Cultivation, Care & Harvesting Garlic Chives

We’ve only recently been growing garlic chives and they’ve become an indispensable herb in our garden. Found in raised beds, woven through the Food Forest and tucked into smaller spaces where they’re needed most, garlic chives bring both flavour and function to our growing areas, like chives.

Their upright growth, delicate white flowers and strong garlicky scent make them especially valuable as a companion plant. We use them throughout the garden for natural pest deterrence, planting them alongside vegetables, fruit bushes and young trees. They thrive in our conditions with minimal effort and provide reliable harvests from Spring through Autumn.

Garlic chives are wonderfully easy to care for. Regular cutting encourages fresh, tender growth, and established clumps return stronger each year. They can be divided or grown from seed with ease, making them a long term, low maintenance addition that continues to support both our kitchen and the wider garden ecosystem.
