All About Series: Growing, Sowing, Caring For Mangelwurzel
Written For Caledonian Horticulture

We have a guest blog series at Caledonian Horticulture talking about what we grow in our garden in Scotland, UK which if UK had zones it would be in Zone 8b.

In this series of blogs we detail all the soft fruits, fruit & nut trees, herbs, edible flowers & veggies that we are growing in our Food Forest, Mini linear Food Forest, Raised Beds and Kitchen Courtyard Garden.  Through this series, you’ll discover practical tips on how to sow, grow, divide, prune and care for a variety of plants, while looking at sustainable and environmentally friendly gardening practices.

You can find the full list of the ongoing series

Mangelwurzel might not be the most common crop in modern gardens, but we’ve loved bringing it back into ours

These old fashioned roots are full of character large, hardy and surprisingly versatile. Originally grown for livestock, they’re just as interesting for the home grower, especially if you enjoy experimenting with heritage varieties and making the most of your space.

They’re easy to grow, cope well with our climate, and store brilliantly, making them a great option for anyone looking to extend their harvests into the colder months. There’s something satisfying about lifting those big roots at the end of the season!

We’ve put together a full GUIDE written for Caledonian Horticulture, covering how we grow, harvest, store, and even use them in the kitchen.
